Nikon has launched a bold new program to encourage people to buy its new Z 50 camera: assuming you live in the U.S., you can buy the camera, and if you’re not satisfied, you can return it and receive a full refund, including the cost of shipping.
In a slightly odd move, this sales tactic is called “Yellow,” perhaps to tie in with Nikon’s logo. There are three packages available: body only, the standard kit lens (DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR), or the standard kit lens along with the DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR. Nikon’s APS-C mirrorless camera has generally been well-received despite the lack of glass currently available.
The marketing immediately positions this as a promise to smartphone users that they will get better results from the Z 50. Full details of the offer along with how to order can be found on the Nikon website.
While some will see this as a desperate move by Nikon to shift some stock (and notably, sales in Japan have been doing quite well), it could actually be quite a canny move, cutting out vendors and increasing Nikon’s profit margins.
